How to Turn a Spelling List Into a Game
Six playful ways to practice spelling without losing the sound and pattern work children need.
Sort by spelling pattern
Ask the child to group words by vowel sound, word family, prefix, suffix, syllable type, or another visible pattern. Let the child name the rule and identify the word that does not fit. Sorting makes the list easier to understand and remember.
Play missing-letter detective
Write each word with one meaningful letter or spelling team missing. Read the word aloud, let the child complete it, and ask why those letters belong there. Choose blanks that focus attention on the week's spelling feature.
Build a sentence challenge
Draw two or three words and use them in one sensible sentence. Award a point for correct spelling and another for a clear sentence. This adds vocabulary and writing practice while keeping the spelling words in context.
Use retrieval, not copying
Hide the word before the child spells it. If there is an error, compare the attempt with the word, identify the tricky part, cover it, and try again. Retrieval practice reveals what the child actually knows.
